Eastern Tennessee is home to the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Great Smoky Mountains. Running west from the Blue Ridge is the Appalachian Ridge and Valley Region with fertile valleys separated by wooded ridges. To the west is the Appalachian Plateau, also referred to as the Cumberland Plateau. It is covered with flat-topped mountains and is separated by steep valleys. Western Tennessee is a wide area of rolling hills and streams that is bordered by the famous Mississippi River.
